Intermediate Algebra Week of May 23

Hi everyone! Please see below for updates for Intermediate Algebra for this week.

Today in class we are taking our Rational Functions Unit Test. Most students did not finish in class today so we will be taking time tomorrow to finish them up. Our last mini unit for the year is on Transformations of Functions (with a focus on absolute value functions, square root functions, and quadratic functions). Students will have a self paced work day in class on the block day- this will involve taking notes and then some independent and partner work time.

The test for Transformations will either be on Wednesday, June 1 or the block day (Thursday/Friday June 2/3) depending on time.

Monday homework (due Tuesday): Watch video "Transformation of Absolute Value Functions" and take notes (note sheet handed out in class)
Tuesday homework (due block day Wednesday/Thursday): Transformations of Absolute Value Functions Worksheet
Block day homework (due Tuesday, May 31): Transformations of Square Root Functions Worksheet

Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Intermediate Algebra Updates Thursday, April 14

Hello all! Please see below for updates for Intermediate Algebra this week.

We finished up our Solving Quadratics Unit this week. Students started their test on Tuesday and finished in class on Wednesday (I was out sick on Wednesday). I will get these in the grade book by the end of the night on Thursday. We are beginning our unit on Exponential Functions this week. Next week we will be pausing to take our MCAs.

Some notes for the MCA:
-Students will be taking the MCA in class Tuesday, April 19 thru Friday, April 22.
-Students do not need to bring any math binders, folders, or textbooks to class during this time.
-Students need to either leave their cell phone in their locker OR turn it in to "cell phone day care" when they get to class (same goes for any other technology like ipods or kindles). They can bring a book to read if they finish early that day or can quietly draw.
-Please do your best to ensure your child gets a good nights sleep and has a good breakfast. This is your child's time to show what they have learned and it is important that they do their very best!

Homework this week:
Wednesday (due block day 4/14 or 4/15)
Holt 11.1 page 793 #17-31
Block day (due Monday 4/18)
Holt 11.2 page 800 #18-27, 35, 37

Thank you! Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

Welcome back from spring break!

Hi all! Welcome back from spring break. I hope everyone had a chance to relax and enjoy some down time.

Just a reminder that the end of the quarter is quickly approaching. The last day of quarter 3 is Thursday, April 7. Students in Intermediate Algebra have until the end of the this week (April 1) to retake the Parabolas Part 3 Unit Test (if they want and/or need to). Just a reminder- students have 2 weeks from when an assessment is given to complete a retake. After that, the window closes.

IA Homework (due Tuesday, March 29): Solving Quadratics by Graphing and Factoring

Students in Investigations can always fix any assignments they did not get a 10/10 on and turn them in again for points back.

Please take the time to check your student's grades this week. A handful of students are missing assignments or still have a test or retake to get done. I am after school on Tuesday and Thursday this week. I will also be in for 7th and 8th grade lunch on Friday.

Feel free to contact me via phone or email with any questions or concerns. Thank you!

March 14 Updates

Happy Pi Day! See below for updates.

Investigations
We are finishing up our Domino Effects activity in the beginning of class. Students used some information regarding Domino's pizza pricing to figure out how much they charge per topping and for the base cheese pizza for a small, medium, and large. We are then spending the rest of the day making Pi Day bracelets!

Intermediate Algebra
We are starting our unit on Solving Quadratics. Students will be taking notes in class Monday and then watching a flipped video in class on the block day. They will get time to work on homework in class both days. If students use their time well they should not have any homework over spring break.

Monday (due Tuesday 3/15)
Holt 9.5 book work, page 645, #15-23 odds, 25-29, 31, 34-36
Block day (due Monday, 3/28)

IA March 3

Hello! Students took their Parabolas Part 2 test yesterday in class. This has already been entered into the grade book. Today they started learning about the last form of quadratic equations- factored form. The block day (Thursday or Friday depending on when students have it) is set up as a self paced work day. Students had a flipped video to watch and then two worksheets to work on. Whatever they did not finish is homework over the weekend and is due Monday. Most students got the majority of work done in class and only had a little bit to finish up at home. A link to the block day handouts is below if you need an extra copy (students were told they can cross out question 17 and do not have to do it).

Intermediate Algebra- Welcome to Quarter 3!

Hi all,

Students in Intermediate Algebra took their semester 2 pre-test today in class. This does not go in the grade book. We will compare student's pre-test score to their post-test score at the end of the year to see how much growth they have made.

Tomorrow we will return to our unit on factoring. We will spend Tuesday reviewing the learning targets we have covered so far and students will have a worksheet to complete as homework (attached below). Wednesday we will learn one last factoring method. We will use the block day to summarize our strategies and continue practicing what we've learned.

Students will take the final unit test on Factoring on Tuesday, February 9.

Tuesday homework (due Wednesday): Mixed Factoring Practice

End of Quarter 2 Update

Hi! Please see below for class updates.

Intermediate Algebra
Students are finishing their semester 1 final in class today or tomorrow. This will go on your student's quarter 2 grade. Final grades for quarter 2 should be available early next week. There is no homework over the long weekend. We will start quarter 3 by taking our semester 2 pretest. This is not graded but gives me a chance to see what students may already know about the material. From there we will go back to our Factoring unit and finish that up.

Investigations
We finished up our data and statistics unit last week and have moved on to ratios and proportions. Our first activity was called "New-trition Info" and we had a lot of good in class discussion. The activity focused on figuring out how many calories different people burn while doing different activities. Then, using that info, students were able to figure out how long it would take those people to burn off different foods. We looked at a McDonald's nutritional information sheet and students were surprised by some of the things on there! Students were also surprised to learn that they burn calories just while sitting!

As always, please check Schoolview to see how your student is doing. Feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns. Thank you!
